So. Following the advice of STARS I saw in another thread......

ok ok, I wasn't exactly taking the STARS advice but it sounds good that way. haha.

I decided to go get a 12 ga pump. I got a Remington 870. I was looking at the stores add online and they had a mossberg 500 that caught my eye. So i went to the store (it's about a half hour away) to go check it out. Turns out they don't keep all the stuff from the add in the store, you have to order off the net and pick it up. But they pointed out that they had an 870 so i decided to check it out. It was slightly more expensive than the sale price they had on the 500, but I figured the less hassle, not having to go back, and being able to leave with the gun right there it was worth the little extra.

I dont have pics cause my phone takes shit pics...but hey you guys probably all know what it looks like. lol.

Haven't taken it to the range yet... probably do that friday.

It's hard to go wrong with an 870.

Great choice Blah. It's proven, parts are common, every gunsmith knows his way around one. Wouldn't be in half the squad cars, duck blinds and deer fields of the country if it sucked.

Everyone needs a good 12 ga. pump. They are tough as nails, and last about forever. They have all kinds of ammo just waiting for em. You can shoot ducks and geese, turkey, quail and pheasant, deer and big game, clay pigeons and people with em.

And launch flares Laughing

So. Like I said I was going to go the range today to try out the new shotgun. I gotta say.... i agree with every good thing I have heard about it. It's great. A ton of fun. Shoots great. I even took some pics of the targets! I only took pics after 1 or 5 hits of 00 buck. I shoulda took pics of the targets I absolutely destroyed with the target load. The center of the silhouettes were absolutely gone. It was a blast. lol.

So in case anyone cares... which you probably don't... but here it is anyways.

First,

1 shot at 20 ft with federal 00 buckshot. See the one pellet that went kinda stray to the top right.

4 more for a total 5 at 20 ft.

1 shot at 25 ft with winchester 00 buckshot. The winchester felt like it had more kick than the federal did. But it wasn't too much more.

4 more for a total of 5 at 25 ft.

I shot 5 more at 30 ft too but didn't take any pics. I also went through a box and a half of target load too and destroyed a few silhouettes. All in all... I'm happy with the buy. I had the two different brands of buckshot and both fired fine. I had 2 brands of target load and both fired fine. I would have shot more I was starving and wanted to get home to eat.

Couple things I learned.....and I think I remember WSW posting something like this last year sometime but not sure where the thread is.... rack the goddamn thing like a man and not a pussy. Not racking it hard leads to having to pull the spent casing out by hand and slower next shot.

I learned I need to work on how to hold it to reduce the effects of the recoil. Does anyone have any tips on how to properly hold the stock against my shoulder?

I was pleasantly surprised with my aiming given my lack of experience with shotguns. Out of the two 00 buck I used I think I liked the federal more. It was the low recoil load and I could tell the difference. I'm going to experiment with all the different brands/loads of buck I can to find the right one for me.

So does anyone have any tips I could make good use of? Anything is welcome!

Place the lower portion of the butt of the shotgun in the 'cup' of your shoulder (between the chest and shoulder muscles) and hold it there firmly.

Other than that you really need to just shoot it and practice manipulating it. And as always, see if there is anyone near you that offers a shotgun class.

That's some nice shootin. You know I would love take some advanced friearms classes but three things plague me. Time, money and I don't know how to tell the good ones from the bad ones.

Thanks sarge! I'll do that. I think I was shooting with the butt too low. And practice... you mean shoot lots more? yeah i think i can handle that Very Happy Cool man. thanks for the tip on the butt. I'll let you know how that works for me. As far as class... I'm not sure of anywhere that does off hand. I should look. The range I go to i know has CCW, defensive handgun, and youth .22. Don't think they have shotgun though.. bastards!

And thanks ihop. I aim to please... heh. get it? aim? i kill myself sometimes. I'm sure some wish i would succeed in killing myself though Laughing

Blah, buy some tactical low recoil buckshot. Its not an I think regular buckshot thing or anything at all. Its more accurate, stays in a tighter pattern farther, your recovery time is quicker, and you can practice more before it becomes a chore.

Good shooting tho!!!

cool. I'll be looking the low recoil STARS. Thankfully there's quite a few places around here to buy ammo. Probably go to walmart for target or birdshot for practicing. Not sure if they had low recoil. The gun shop where I go to the range sells federal low recoil. So I know i have that. And how convenient. I'll have to check out another gun shop and then there's dick's and gander mountain too.

Blah, congrats on the purchase! An 870 is one of the best buys you could make. I'll second Sarge's advice and add that the way you stand makes a difference too. Feet apart almost in a boxer's stance, if you're right handed your left foot somewhat forward. Lean forward into the shotgun while pulling the shotgun in TIGHT to your shoulder.

This is the best photo I could find quickly, guess I'm getting lazy in my old age!

Lean forward

Great advice for shooting any weapon.

Man, I wish I could tattoo that on some peoples foreheads!!!

Such a simple act yet seems so hard for people to comprehend!
